The Madrid region (Comunidad de Madrid) represents the main site of Spanish industry, research, and education in the aerospace sector. It accounts for around 92% of the country's aerospace activity, both in terms of direct employment and turnover. The space-industrial landscape in the Madrid region is also well diversified, featuring components suppliers, specialised engineering, major component integrators, and satellite service providers. Comunidad de Madrid has a population of some 6,480,000 citizens, most of whom are concentrated in the city of Madrid. The region maintains its economic leadership by increasing its attractiveness as a headquarters for not only domestic and foreign companies, but students and entrepreneurs, as well. The Madrid region is also home to a large number of public and private universities and boasts Spain's highest level of investment in R&D. In 2012, it invested EUR 3.434 billion - 1.8% of the region's GDP - in such efforts, representing 25.6% of total R&D investment in the country.
